Fat/No chance

Possibility/ the fact that something might exist or happen, but is not certain to 

Probability/ how likely something is to happen

likelihood = probability 都是概率的意思

 

這兩個詞是客觀的可能性,可以表示有可能,也可以表示沒可能,比如:

The likelihood of getting the disease is very high.

The probability of getting 100 points is very low.

 

possibility 是有可能的意思

there is a possibility that something will happen.

 

注意,如果把上面的句子改成:

there is a probability that something will happen.

意思就由原來的某事可能發生,變成某事很可能發生。

 

也就是說probability有兩種用法,一個和likelihood一樣,表示概率;一個比possbility意思相似但程度更深,表示很可能

 

Distinct/ easily or clearly heard, seen, felt, etc. 清晰的;清楚的;明白的;明顯的

Definite/distinct probability

 

Chance/hope :多半指偶然的一個機會

Opportunity: 比較沒有偶然、突然的一個機會

 

Call a meeting, an election, a strike舉行會議、選舉、罷工

Likelihood/probability

 

@Be pretty slender=slim苗條的;

slim small 微薄的;不足的;少的;小的, a slim chance of success 成功的可能性不大

Skinny=乾瘦的;皮包骨的

 

@The odds/ the degree to which something is likely to happen (事物發生的)可能性,概率,幾率,機會

The odds are very much in our favour(= we are likely to succeed). 我方勝算的幾率極大。

The odds are heavily against him(= he is not likely to succeed). 他成功的幾率很小。

The odds are that(= it is likely that)she’ll win. 她有可能會贏。

What are the odds(= how likely is it)he won’t turn up? 他不會露面的可能性有多大?

  • She rejected the charge that the story was untrue. 她否認了說她編造事實的指責。
  • Be careful you don’t leave yourself open to charges of political bias. 你要小心別留下把柄,讓人家指責你帶有政治偏見。

They want to beat the speed record (= go faster than anyone before). 他們想打破這一速度紀錄。

@To fade/ if a sports player, team, actor, etc.fades, they stop playing or performing as well as they did before(運動員、運動隊、演員等)走下坡路,衰退,衰落

  • Black faded on the final bend. 布萊克在最後一個彎道處速度慢了下來。

  • She whacked him with her handbag. 她用手提包狠狠地打他。
  • James whacked the ball over the net. 詹姆斯猛力把球擊過網去。

@To blow sth/ to waste an opportunity 浪費(機會) VN informal

  • She blew her chances by arriving late for the interview. 她面試時遲到,結果錯過了機會。
  • You had your chance and you blew it. 你本來有機會,卻沒有抓住。

@To drop/ to become or make something weaker, lower or less (使)變弱,降低,減少

@To get into sudden death playoff(突然死賽)

@To blast/  to explode or destroy something or someone with explosives, or to break through or hit something with a similar, very strong force
